Phillipstown Hub gathering place “Kotahitanga” officially opened

On the 25th of March our new project, Kotahitanga, was officially opened. More than 100 people gathered in the new community space at the Phillipstown Community Hub to share kai and companionship. What a fantastic day with a wonderful community!

Named by the Phillipstown Community Hub, Kotahitanga means togetherness, unity, solidarity, collective action. And this gathering space embodies the meaning perfectly. The name was unveiled after a blessing by Phillipstown Community Hub kaumatua Richard Tankersley, followed by music by the Koro Band (made up of members all aged over 70!).

We started consultation with the community at the Phillipstown Hub in April last year, and over time the design changed to reflect what the community wanted and needed from the space. The new facility has two roofed structures with a pizza/bread oven, dining tables and chairs, a bench space and a raised wooden platform. The area is surrounded by gardens and is modular and moveable. A BBQ for community use will be added later, as well as a community pantry to store fresh vegetables from the PTH community garden.

Both the design and construction work was undertaken with volunteer help and donations from businesses from the community, like Briford Trailers, HireKing, Daveron Scaffolding, Loscam, Hynds and The Pumphouse. The support from the Phillipstown Hub, the Christchurch City Council and the generous contributions of local businesses has been invaluable to the success and scope of this project. To all the volunteers, sponsors and supporters, thank you, you have been amazing! And a special shout out to officer Spike, who was a key contact for many of our sponsors.

Go and have a look when you are in the neighbourhood!
